High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein

Inflammatory Markers

A systemic inflammation marker that links oral health to overall health.

What is High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein?

hs-CRP is a protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation anywhere in the body. It is measured via a high-sensitivity blood test and is a widely used biomarker for systemic inflammatory status.

Why It Matters

Elevated hs-CRP has been consistently linked to periodontal disease. It also reflects the oral-systemic connection — chronic oral inflammation can raise systemic inflammatory markers, increasing cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk.

What Elevated Levels Mean

Elevated hs-CRP may indicate oral inflammation contributing to systemic inflammatory burden. However, it is not specific to oral disease — other conditions can also raise hs-CRP.

What To Do Next

Your dental and medical providers should collaborate to identify the sources of inflammation. Treating periodontal disease often reduces hs-CRP levels.
