Interleukin-6

Inflammatory Markers

A pro-inflammatory cytokine that signals active tissue inflammation.

What is Interleukin-6?

Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a cytokine — a signaling protein produced by immune cells in response to infection or tissue damage. In the oral cavity, elevated IL-6 indicates that the immune system is actively responding to a bacterial challenge.

Why It Matters

IL-6 drives the acute inflammatory response that, when sustained chronically, leads to tissue destruction and bone loss. Elevated salivary IL-6 is a reliable indicator of periodontal inflammation and has been linked to systemic inflammatory conditions.

What Elevated Levels Mean

Elevated IL-6 indicates active inflammation in the oral tissues. This may reflect an ongoing bacterial infection, tissue injury, or a heightened immune response. When combined with elevated pathogen levels, it confirms active periodontal disease.

What To Do Next

Your provider will address the underlying cause of inflammation — typically bacterial infection. Reducing the pathogen load through treatment should bring IL-6 levels down. Retesting can confirm resolution.
